Obituary for Roderick B. Goff

Roderick B. Goff, long-time resident of Gander, passed peacefully at JPM Hospital on July 27, 2017.

Born August 16, 1916 in Whitney Pier, Cape Breton and raised in Carbonear NL. Predeceased by wife Alice in 1978 and brothers James, Leo, Bernard and John and sisters Kathleen and Patricia. Rod leaves to mourn two sons: Gregory (Gillian) and Colin (Helen) , 8 grandchildren: Danielle Goff-Beaton, Alicia Cooper, Brendan Goff, Peter Goff, Meaghan Ciotti, Brian Goff, Gregory Goff Paul Goff and 8 great grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Saturday July 29th 7- 9pm, Sunday July 30th from 2- 4 and 7- 9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on Monday July 31st at 4pm to be followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery.

Rod arrived Gander in 1940 to work at the Office of the Meteorological Service of Canada. In 1946 he was employed by Pan American Airways and received his Federal Aeronautical Authority (FAA) flight dispatcher’s license. He later accepted employment with Eastern Provincial Airways in 1961 where he worked until retirement in 1981. Following retirement Rod returned to university studies in the Humanities at Memorial University, St. Paul’s University and the University of Ottawa, from which he received his third degree in June 1991. He was active with the Knights of Columbus and the Canadian Kidney Foundation in NL. At age 89 he published his first book. He lived in his own home on Fraser Road Gander until age 95 when he moved to Golden Years Estates seniors home in Gander.
